Obituary for Dorothy Allred (Yip)

Dorothy Allred
July 24, 1956 - May 3, 2019

Dorothy Allred, 62, returned to her heavenly home on May 3, 2019 after a valiant battle with cancer. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.

Dorothy was born 5th in line out of 7 children to the late Moon & Phyllis Yip, restaurant owners in Cardston, AB. Growing up and working at an early age in the family business is where she and her siblings established an incredulous work ethic. She met her high school sweetheart, Ken, in early 1972, where they dated, wrote letters to each other and later married.

God blessed Dorothy & Ken with two children, a daughter Jaimsie (Brad) Hughes, son Jeff (Cindy) Allred, and four wonderful grandchildren – Blake & Isaak Hughes and Elena & Elizabeth Allred. She loved all of her immediate and extended family and often cared for many of her nieces and nephews.

Dorothy came to know the Lord in 1990 and became part of an external blessed family in Christ at Chinese Pentecostal Church, where she loved to teach Sunday school class, arts and crafts, and served the Lord in many ways.

Dorothy was an inspiring artist and talented garment designer and manufacturer extraordinaire. Commencing her sewing business in the 1980’s, she soon grew the business to become one of Canada’s renowned design and garment manufacturing businesses.

Dorothy loved to travel and had a special place in her heart for China, where she visited many times. She graduated from the U of C and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, displaying her artwork at the convocation exhibit. Her heart was infinitely big, so big that it encompassed her love of animals and of course her beloved furless babies, Quito & Chin Chin. She was an avid WWF supporter and abhorred animal cruelty.

She will be sadly missed by all of her precious family, friends and all who knew her. Her talented entrepreneurial self, warm smile and contagious laughter, although gone, will not be forgotten. She gave so much love and left an everlasting memory. She loved Jesus and walked a deeply courageous and empathetic path led by her Savior.

Dorothy was predeceased by her Mother & Father, oldest brother Tony Yip, and brother in-law Barry Zink. She will forever be remembered and dearly missed by her devoted and loving husband, Ken; daughter Jaimsie (Brad) Hughes; son, Jeff (Cindy) Allred; grandchildren, Blake & Isaak Hughes, Elena & Elizabeth Allred; brother, Wone (Joan) Yip; sisters, Lily (Kue) Quon, Fawn (Allan) How, Jeannie Yip, Margaret (Andrew) Stafford; nieces and nephews, Juilana (David) Lookhart, Vincent Quon, Corinne (Yves) Robitaille, Marilyn (Jory Allen) Harder, Evan (Tsering) How, Michael (Jessalyn) How, Mark Yip, Daniel (Stephanie) Yip, Scott Yip, Amy (Devon Wickstrom), Jennifer (Chris Silcox) Stafford; great-nieces and nephews, Josh and Page Lookhart, Jonathan and Emily Robitaille, Jayce and Kiauna Harder, Liam Allen, Madison and Isabelle How, Jude and Maisie Yip.

Funeral Service for Dorothy will be at 11:00am, Friday May 10th at the Calgary Church of Christ – 4030 Maryvale Drive NE Calgary. Flower arrangements may be sent to Choice Memorial at 105 – 4715 13th Street NE Calgary on Thursday May 9th or to the Calgary Church of Christ before service begins at 11:00am.
