Obituary for Shirley Claire McDonald (Hanson)

Shirley Claire McDonald (nee Hanson)

January 31, 1931 - Cereal, Alberta
May 11, 2019 - Calgary, Alberta

Shirley passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 11, 2019.

Shirley began life on the farm, moved to Sedalia for grade school and graduated high school in Oyen in 1948. She trained at the Holy Cross School of Nursing in Calgary, RN Class of 1953.

She married Hector McDonald and raised her family in Edmonton and in 1970 they moved to Calgary. Their home was an inn for many, and the family gathering place where she hosted countless festive dinners.

Shirley volunteered with several charities and worked for three years as a home care worker with the elderly.

She enjoyed reading, going out for coffee, crossword puzzles, sewing, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and gardening! Board and card games with anyone who would play were welcome. Hands down, her favorite activity was spending time with her grand and great grandchildren.

She was a life long curler and member of the Foothills Ladies League for over forty years. She belonged to the Brentwood Bridge Club, rarely missed a Holy Cross nursing reunion, and bowled for many years.

Shirley is survived by her sons Neil, Drew (Bernice), Eric (Debbi), and Darrel (Debbie); grandchildren Casey (Karen), Cameron (Meghan), Greg, Braedon (Mary), and Keltie (Malachy); great-grandchildren Evie, Andi, Katie, and Frannie.

She was pre-deceased by her loving husband Hector; parents Hans and Hjordis; brothers Roald, Manley, and Delmar.

In lieu of flowers, if people choose, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.

A casual drop in get-together will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2019 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Triwood Community Hall, 2244 Chicoutimi Drive NW, Calgary, Alberta.
